This visa is for young people who want to holiday and work in Australia for up to a year.

Basic requirements:

- an applicant must hold an eligible passport:

- an applicant must be are at least 18 but less than 31 years of age (for some countries less than 35)

- an applicant must not have a dependent child with them at any time during their stay in Australia

- an applicant must have enough money to support themselves on a working holiday (about AUD 5000)

- an applicant must have enough money to buy a return or onward travel ticket at the end of the stay

- an applicant must not have previously entered Australia on a Working Holiday visa (subclass 417)

- an applicant must meet the educational requirements

- an applicant must have functional English

- an applicant must have a letter of support from your government (except applicants from the USA, China and Israel)

- an applicant must meet character and health requirements

- an applicant must be a genuine visitor

Functional English

- evidence you are a citizen of and hold a valid passport issued by the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, New Zealand, or the Republic of Ireland
- an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) average band score of at least 4.5 for the four test components (speaking, reading, listening and writing) completed within 12 months of visa application lodgement
- the Occupational English Test (OET) completed within 12 months of visa application lodgement
- a Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT) total band score of at least 32 for the four test components of speaking, reading, writing and listening completed within 12 months of visa application lodgement
- a Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) overall band score of at least 30 for the four test components of speaking, reading, writing and listening completed within 12 months of visa application lodgement
- a Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) test overall band score of at least 147 for the four test components of speaking, reading, writing and listening and the test must have been taken on or after 1 January 2015
- all years of primary education and at least three years of secondary school at an institution where all the instruction was in English
- at least five years of secondary education (high school) at an educational institution in which all instruction was in English
- a post-secondary qualification with at least two years of full-time study, in which all tuition was in English
- at least one year of full-time study or equivalent towards a degree, higher degree, diploma or associate diploma at an Australian institution where all the instruction was in English
- evidence of successful completion of an English Bagrut exam in the level of three study units (Israeli applicants only)

Entitlements for 462 visa holders

This visa allows to:
- stay in Australia for up to 12 months
- work in Australia for up to six months with each employer
- study for up to four months
- leave and re-enter Australia any number of times while the visa is valid.

FAQ

Can I apply for this visa in Australia?

No, you must be outside Australia.

After 19 November, if you want to extend your 462 visa,  you may be in or outside Australia.

Can I extend my 462 visa?

Currently no, you can't extend this visa. Citizens of Islamic Republic of Iran used to be able to apply for up to 2 extensions.

However, after 19 November 2016, you may be able to extend your 462 visa if you have carried out work in areas of Australia and of a kind specified by the Minister, for at least three months as the holder of the first 462 visa. The specified work is intended to be work undertaken in the agriculture, forestry, fisheries, tourism and hospitality industries in the Northern Territory and northern parts of Western Australia and Queensland.

Can I go on a visitor visa when my 462 expires?

if you have been in Australia for 12 consecutive months as the holder of 462 visa, you will be able to obtain a visitor visa in exceptional circumstances only.

Can I go on a student visa if I would like to study?

If you hold 462 visa and you are in Australia, you cannot apply for a student visa before 01 July 2016. On or after 01 July 2016, you can apply for a student visa.

Can I apply for any other visa?

It depends on visa conditions attached to your current 462 visa. We see very often people applying for 457 visa.

Second 462 Work and Holiday (Extension)

From 19 November 2016, 462 visa holders or former 462 visa holders may be eligible to seek extension of 462 visa by another year.

To be eligible:

- they must have carried out specified work (see below) for a total period of at least 3 months as the holder of the first 462 visa. The work must have been undertaken after 18 November 2016 and been remunerated in accordance with relevant Australian legislation and awards.

- they can seek one extension only

- if the applicant is in Australia, the applicant must hold a substantive visa or have held a substantive visa at any time in the period of 28 days immediately before making the application for the extension

- the applicant is at least 18 but has not turned 31 (for some countries 35)

- the applicant must have an eligible passport (see above)

- the applicant must be a genuine visitor and have enough money to support themselves and for travel fares back overseas

- the applicant must meet general health and character requirements and intend to comply with the attached visa conditions

  • transporting trees or parts of trees that were felled in a plantation or forest to the place where they are first to be milled or processed or from which they are to be transported to the place where they are to be milled or processed.
