    7 November 2014: DIBP has put in place new visa and border arrangements for all travellers from EVD-affected countries in Africa. These arrangements include:

    • a temporary suspension of processing of visa applications for permanent visas and some provisional visas from EVD affected countries
    • in some circumstances, cancelling visas that have been granted to persons currently outside of Australia when those persons have been in an EVD affected country in the last 21 days
    • refusing some visa applications for temporary visas unless applicants are assessed as posing no risk of EVD.

  • More nationalities now eligible for SmartGate use

    31 October 2014: Minister Morrison confirmed SmartGate was now available on a trial basis to Canadian and Irish ePassport holders at all major Australian international airports. SmartGate technology is currently available as a permanent arrangement to e-Passport holders from Australia, New Zealand, UK, US and Singapore while a trial for Swiss e-Passport holders is still underway. The Code of Conduct for registered migration agents is set out in legislation to regulate the conduct of registered migration agents. 

The Code of Conduct:

(a) protects clients of migration agents; and

(b) strengthens the integrity of the immigration advice industry and Australia’s immigration system.


Provision for a Code of Conduct for migration agents is set out in Section 314 of the Migration Act 1958.
